As part of the celebrations for May 15, Kurdish Language Day, the city of Wan hosted the Spring of Children – Nûbihara Biçûkan poetry recitation competition, bringing together children from several cities across Northern Kurdistan in a vibrant and enthusiastic event.
Organized through the collaboration of Akademy, the Ehmedê Xanî Institute, and Nûbihar, the competition was held to mark Kurdish Language Day and encourage children’s engagement with the Kurdish language. The event took place at the conference hall of the Wan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and attracted significant public interest.
151 Children from Seven Cities Participated
The competition, which aims to strengthen children’s connection to their mother tongue and Kurdish literature, welcomed participants from seven cities: Wan, Colemerg, Elih, Amed, Sert û Bedlis. A total of 151 children applied to take part.
Following an evaluation by the jury, 20 finalists were selected to perform on stage, where they recited Kurdish poems with remarkable skill and confidence.
Winners and Awards
At the conclusion of the competition, the following participants received the top awards:
- Songul Dinçer – First Place
- Delal Duman – Second Place
- Gul Kaya – Third Place
Successful participants were awarded prizes including a quarter gold coin, a tablet computer, a smartwatch, and cash prizes.
Artists Added Color to the Event
Presented by Macit Orhan and Cahide Koç, the program evolved into a lively cultural festival thanks to the participation of several artists. Renowned dengbej (traditional Kurdish singer) Taha Bozdemir, along with artists Neslihan Edis and Shivan Ulas, delighted the audience with Kurdish songs and performances, further enhancing the excitement of the day.
“We Want This Competition to Become a Tradition”
Representatives of the organizing institutions emphasized that the competition is not merely a contest but also an effort to preserve and promote the Kurdish language among younger generations. They stated their intention to continue organizing the “Spring of Children” competition in the coming years and to establish it as a lasting tradition that helps children grow up connected to their language, culture, and heritage.
